Bus Stops Now Let You Play Games Against People At Other Bus Stops

Waiting for a bus is boring. But it's about to get much less boring in San Francisco, where touchscreen multi-player games are coming to bus shelters.Yahoo installed huge poster-size touchscreens at 20 San Francisco bus stops, allowing commuters to play online games against people at other bus stops. Nothing brings out my allegiance to my neighborhood like some crazyass futuristic sports trivia.

That's one of the several games available to people waiting for the bus, along with puzzles and others. And what would competition be without incentive? The neighborhood that racks up the most points before the end of next week will get to host a block party featuring the band OK Go.

The screens were made possible by some unholy advertising alliance between Yahoo, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, and the evilest of all evils, Clear Channel, but I trust commuters aren't going to let that spoil their fun. Cause this has to be the coolest thing Yahoo or Clear Channel have done, like, ever, right? VIA

Ariel - Project Return

Ok, if Ariel Stain Remover is so extremely effective, it must mean it makes my clothes extremely clean. And if my clothes are so clean, it must mean it looks brand new. If my clothes are brand new, it must mean I can return them whenever and however. Even if I bought it from, let's say Louis Vuitton. Thanks to Luong Lu for the tip.

Vattenfall - Neighbor Dining

Straight men avoid publicly stating that they’re pro-gay for various reasons. Our idea is to have their girlfriends do it for them. That makes them pro-gay and unquestionably straight at the same time.

The Hero Food Movement

Jamie Oliver together with OpenIDEO created a competition to find solutions on how to change the way kids eat in the U.S. Teaching them how to cook and what fresh food can do for them. Here is one of the winners.
The idea is to teach kids about the importance of fresh and healthy foods by a clear connection to their heroes. Superman has good eye sight, so maybe he eats carrots! Let’s talk about carrots. The goal is to create a positive spiral among student and parents in understanding the importance of fresh and healthy food.

RFID in shoes aka KarmaTech

A concept made for the module Advanced Interface Design at Hyper Island hosted by North Kingdom. They call it KarmaTech, and I love it!.

"This school project was hosted by North Kingdom and the brief was to connect the brand WeSC to music and/or art with the goal of creating an impression so great that the receiver wants to be the first one to share the experience. The basic idea is to put an RFID tag in a shoe. The user makes an active choice to connect their shoe to different social platforms. Tag readers can be placed and interact in different ways." - Hampus

3D Holographic Glass Paintings by Xia Xiao Wan

Amazing artwork by Chinese painter Xia Xiao Wan. His technique consists of using special pencils, tinted glass, and 14 to 30 glass panes. Click on images for higher quality.

In Xia Xiaowan’s latest show, “Painting From the Inside,” “painting” is conceived of as both as a physical act and artistic outcome. Under such a pretext, Xia Xiaowan’s works seek to investigate and question the essence of painting as well as the process of creation, sensual perception and our observation of reality.Since his early drawings, master sketcher Xia Xiaowan has restlessly been pushing the boundaries of Western traditional realistic painting. His goal, in all of this, has been to explore, by means of expanded and diffracted viewpoints, a new and ‘true vision’ which goes beyond the principles of physics. Dating back to sketches from the late 80s and early 90s, Xia Xiaowan’s subjects are often depicted from unusual angles and sometimes even appear deformed. At the same time, they appear to float in space. In short, over time, his works have increasingly departed from objectivity, realism and a strictly two-dimensional plane. It was from 2003 that Xia Xiaowan’s works found their ‘true space,’ gaining a three-dimensional quality and materially becoming in-air, ‘spacial paintings’.

Real Life Super Hero Stops Crime

A man who has appointed himself a masked guardian of a Seattle suburb is nursing his pride after sustaining an injury in the line of duty. Phoenix Jones, dubbed the real-life Kick-Ass after the movie about vigilante superheroes, had his nose broken during a brawl. Part of a band of civilian crimefighters who have dubbed themselves the Rain City Superhero Movement, he had been been roaming the streets in search of injustice. But after attempting to break up a fight in the city of Lynnwood, Washington, the aspiring avenger was turned over by two baddies who assaulted him at gunpoint. A Seattle Police Department spokesman confirmed that he is part of a band of at least nine do-gooders trying to keep the streets safe. Phoenix Jones's accomplices are nicknamed Thorn, Buster Doe, Green Reaper, Gemini, No Name, Catastrophe, Thunder 88 and Penelope.

In what could turn out to be the rise of the obligatory comic-book super villain, police have been told by the group to disregard Captain Ozone or Knight Owl - because they are not part of the movement. Phoenix Jones says he called the police when he saw a brawl brewing in Lynnwood and put one man in a headlock while he waited for police. But then another man pulled a gun and the superhero's nose was broken. Read more at Dailymail.

Contact lenses will project images directly onto your eyeballs

All those 3DTVs and virtual reality goggles are soon to be rendered obsolete by contact lenses with built-in LED arrays that can display images on top of your retinas, whether you want them to or not.

Researchers at the University of Washington have been working on extremely tiny and semi-transparent LEDs designed to be integrated into contact lenses. So far, they've managed to create red pixels and blue pixels, and when they can figure out green ones, they'll be able to make full color displays.

Despite being millimeters from your retinas, the images created by the lenses will be in perfect focus, and when the display is turned off, everything will be transparent. Since the lenses are inside your eyelids, though, you can't un-see anything that they decide to project, which is something that you'll have to consider when you're watching something especially scary or gross on them. Power will come from a beltpack that transmits electricity wirelessly to a resonating antenna in the lens itself, and data will be transmitted the same way so that you don't have to plug HDMI cables into your eye sockets.

In the meantime, we've already got eyeball-mounted wireless sensors for detecting things like blood glucose levels, so it's really just a matter of time before LEDs and their associated electronics get small enough and cheap enough that we can all afford to be enjoying visual overlays of stupid YouTube videos 24/7. EARTH: The Pale Blue Dot

"In all of their brilliance, NASA seems to have forgotten to share their hopes and dreams in a way the public can relate to, leaving one of humanities grandest projects with terrible PR and massive funding cuts. I got frustrated with NASA and made this video. NASA is the most fascinating, adventurous, epic institution ever devised by human beings, and their media sucks. This piece contains readings from Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot". I have edited his words to tell this short narrative. The piano is self-composed." Michael Marantz

AXE Excite Makes Angels Fall from the Skies

AXE Brazil teamed up with the BBH agency to present a new provocative commercial just in its usual teasing and tongue-in-cheek style. Now, the story is centered on the divine creatures of the universe who come down to earth and turn into mortal ones just because of AXE Excite (and the guy wearing it). The fragrance can make you forget the rules and commitments, because even heaven can’t resist the temptation when smells this alluring scent. The new advert, entitled ‘The Fall (Angels),’ feature a rooster of international fashion models, such as Magda Klebanska (Poland), Adewole Betty and Frances Phillips (Britain), Sara Sampson and Josipa Jankovic (Portugal), Ivanovic Josipa and Iva Grdic (Croatia). They are angels, which come down from the skies when the leading character (Domenico Clores) sprays the new Axe all over his chest. They get together and come up to the handsome guy when he is about to ride away on his motorbike, take their nimbus and crash them to prove that they can break with their past just to be with him. Naturally, the man is greatly astonished by the effect (since the packaging hasn’t warned of this ‘danger’).

Best iPhone Holster in Town

Kickstarter, the site that helps people fund product ideas and concepts, designer Myles Christensen just needs $3,000 to start his design project “iPhone Holster”. The iPhone Holster is a case that fits all versions Apple has released of the iPhone and the iPod touch so far. It is designed to look like an old west gun holster.
"The iPhone Holster is a leather cell-phone case that is designed to look like a gun holster. It loops onto your belt, and the iPhone slips comfortably inside. Christensen says that if his project gets funded (he needs the money by February 3), the first people ordering the iPhone Holster should receive it by the end of February."
